Educating Myself and Others

Using This Unit
  1. Before class, visit the site, print and copy the materials you will need to teach this Unit including the Student Worksheet. You can also download two student activities:
When Someone Close and Alcohol and the Family.

  2. In the computer lab, distribute the Student Worksheet and direct students to explore one or more of these activities.
    • When Someone Close in the Arcade
    • Alcohol and the Family in the Information Resource Centre
    • Getting Help in the Information Resource Centre
    • Learning More in the Information Resource Centre

  3. In class, discuss the following topics based on either student exploration of the site or your distribution of print handouts.

    • Review the Getting Help material in the Information Resource Centre regarding some general categories of help. Since the best sources of help are local ones in the community, ask students to create a map or a list of local organizations that offer assistance to people who have problems with alcohol.

    • Generate a discussion in class based on the handouts you created before the class: When Someone Close or Alcohol and the Family. This material is best treated in a neutral, straightforward fashion. Ensure that students know that they can talk privately to you or the school's guidance counsellor regarding any sensitive personal issues raised by the discussion.

    • Point students and parents to the Learning More section in the Information Resource Centre to find books and Web sites related to alcohol use and misuse.
